2013 SLAMMY AWARDS:
- Faction of the Year
- Breakout Stars of the Year
- Hashtag of the Year for #BelieveInTheShield
- “What a Maneuver!” for Roman Reigns’s Spear
WWE RAW, 12/9/13
It was announced last week that the presenters for the Slammy Award for Double-Cross of the Year would be the three men who are known for being a tight-knit group. However, if you’ve been following the Shield for a month or so, you’ve noticed how fractured their team is becoming what with these egos starting to clash. Nevertheless, the black-clad trio showed up to Seattle - in black suits no less - seemingly having things on track.
Ambrose started the presentation by stating that he knows he looks good (I mean who’d disagree?) and slightly interrupting Roman Reigns during his turn to speak - just slightly. The nominees were presented, and after a commercial break, Ambrose opened the envelope and was in the midst of a beautiful dramatic pause…until Reigns swooped in and announced Shawn Michaels as the winner. Thanks Roman.
Later in the evening, it was a return match from this past Friday night on Smackdown as the cleaned Best in the World CM Punk faced Dean Ambrose once again, this time with the Shield at ringside. It was an incredible match, complete with a “THIS IS AWESOME!” chant from the crowd, before Punk was thrown out of the ring and…Rollins and Reigns did nothing. Ambrose was rather irritated with this turn of events but insisted he’d take care of things himself and excused his teammates before throwing Punk back into the ring.
CM Punk def. Dean Ambrose via pinfall
After the match though, Punk fended off a distraction from Seth long enough to turn around and get speared by Reigns before the Shield hustled out of the arena…together.
A year ago, this birthday post was this cute little “I’m so proud of him and edits don’t do his man’s importance any justice (heh)” for his 27th birthday, back when things were escalating quickly and I had no idea what to expect.
Hell, I still don’t.
This year, however, I feel the theme for Dean, myself, fans, and the wrestling business as a whole has been growth, and that’s certainly what we’ve gotten from Ambrose since his debut on November 18th. Since that time he’s become United States Champion, has faced the likes of Undertaker, John Cena, CM Punk, Randy Orton, Mark Henry, Christian, Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler, Rob Van Dam, Chris Jericho, Daniel Bryan, Sheamus, Ryback - I mean you name ‘em and he’s most likely faced them at some point in 2013. He’s grabbed the attention of so many people, and he’s made it a point to cement his position in the WWE and continue to climb from said position.
He’s done all of this at the lovely (and cursed) age of 27, and here he is turning 28.
For my official birthday edit I decided to compile his goofy-looking candids because with all of the exciting accomplishments he’s achieved, it’s easy for anyone to look at his success and work ethic and think that’s all he knows. I mean of course professional wrestling is practically how the dude functions, but those candids also show that he’s able to not be so business-oriented and just be playful, be himself. He’s a laid-back guy who may seem quiet or shy but is really outgoing once he gets comfortable. I know first-hand he’s also really polite and friendly and always has time to shoot the shit with people, and he’s grateful for it.
That’s the side of Ambrose I hope is having a great birthday. I know the business side of him is taking care of business, and I know both sides will be turning up this 28th birthday in some way, but I really hope the personal (the Jon if you weel) is taking time to enjoy his day and being surrounded by people who admire him as much as I do.
This is also why I’m off to Sacramento this evening to give him the only present I know to give: being a screaming fan of his in an arena watching him do what he loves the most.
And yes, I will bring him some beer and pecan pie as well.
